Merkel in Balkans, 'EU should maintain commitments'

(ANSA) - TIRANA, SEP 14 - The European Union and its member states must live up to their commitments regarding the accession process of the Western Balkans. As soon as the conditions German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today in Tirana, at the end of a meeting with the heads of government of the countries in the region. Currently, Albania and North Macedonia have been given the green light to start accession negotiations, but Sofia's veto against Skopje has stopped the organization of the first intergovernmental conference. "We are hostage to nationalism within individual member states," argued Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who praised the German chancellor, whose visit to Tirana is also a farewell at the end of her fourth term. "In the history of the Balkans, Merkel has set a milestone for future generations as well. No one has done more than she has done since the end of World War II, and no one understands this region better than she does," Rama reiterated. (ANSA).
